The U.S. government spends an estimated $625 billion a year on "defense spending", although the term defense spending is quite often used very loosely. The next closest country is China, who spends about 1/3 of what we spend. Strange that the country with the larger army and a population of about one billion more people spends only a third of what the U.S. spends. Many citizens in the U.S. are aware of this mass amount of spending, but many don't have a clue what the money is actually going to. What in the world could an annual $625 billion be going towards? Often, things that many wouldn't agree with. Just recently, the Pentagon announced that they believe about $500 million worth of military aid given to Yemen has fallen into the arms of either Iranian rebels or Al-Queda members. $500 million... people seem to forget how much that massive that amount of money is. According to stopthehunger.com, to feed everyone hungry (and hungry as in real hunger, not what you feel before you eat a snack), in the world today would cost about $35 million. And we spent $500 million on military equipment that ended up in our enemies hands. If we had taken that money and put it towards the world's hungry, then the U.S. would be able to feed every person in the world that is dying from hunger for about two full weeks. Now, thats no permanent fix to world hunger by all means, but I personally would much rather feed the world's hungry for two full weeks than I would supply our enemies with high class weapons.
